Skidmarks

By Annie Hughes

I saw a flash of silver cut right through the night
Smelled the wheels on fire as she want roarin' by
Found you by the highway, starin' at the stars
Your thumb was pointing my way
You had skidmarks on your heart

Skidmarks

I pulled off on the shoulder, offered you a ride
You looked the whole thing over, then you climbed in side
We rode off into midnight, straight into the hear
Later, in the blue light, you slipped off with my car

Skidmarks

You rev it up
You roll it back
You break a heart
You don't look back

Well, I can hide my feelings, cover up the scars
But is there any healing these skidmarks on my heart?

Skidmarks

"One night I was driving alone through the desert. Out in the black, I saw a blue neon sign for the 'Blue Water Motel.' That image stayed with me for years and eventually inspired this song."

"I think Brian Otto's sleazy guitar is perfect here. I especially like his wolf whistle in the second verse."

"I remember playing this song for a group of young gay men at an AIDS benefit and they went hysterial every time I sang 'skidmarks.' I was baffled because I had never thought of it as a funny song. Finally, somebody took pity and explained it to me."
