Handy with a Heartache
By Randy Handley, Lacy J. Dalton, and Annie Hughes
You might as well sit down
Say what you got to say
Though anyone could see it coming
More than a country mile away
Sometimes crying makes it easier
To get your story told
Here's a shoulder you can lean on
I've got a hand that you can hold
I'm handy with a heartache
I know how it feels to be let down
I'm handy with a heartache
Let me show you around
There's the jukebox, here's a quarter
You're gonna need some lonesome sounds
And there's a barstool in the corner
Where they don't mind if you break down
I'll introduce you to the barkeep
He'll introduce you to old "Jack"
And if you're easy with your money
They'll be glad to see you back
I know the territory
'Cause you see, I've done my time
And I'm familiar with your story
'Cause it sounds a lot like mine
I know just how you're hurtin'
Can't you see it in my eyes
And now you know where I've been waiting
Ever since you said goodbye

"Lacy used to host these monster songwriting sessions at a little converted cabana in the Santa Cruz mountains. She heard some of Randy's work and invited him to come up for a few days. Randy had the chords and melody pretty well mapped out, but with a different lyric. When we got with Lacy, the lyric was rewritten for her."
"Lacy never got around to recording the song, though both Randy and I felt that it was really 'her.' I would have loved to hear that rough, real voice of hers on it. Though my voice is a little too young sounding (phone callers frequently ask, 'Is your mother there.') to really pull it off well, I thought the song deserved a recording so I made one."
"I just love Cornelius Bumpus' soulful sax. He was one of most dedicated musicians I've ever known. When we were on tour, he was up practicing every morning at 7:00. Sadly, Cornelius passed away in 2004."
