Gotta Roll

By Annie Hughes

I grew up by a railroad track
Freight train ran just two streets back
Nights it shook me outa my sleep
And the dishes chattered in the kitchen sink
Sayin', "Oh, Gotta Roll"

On the afternoon of a long, hot day
I could hear her comin' from far away
I'd run and wave to the engineer
And that whistle would blow right through my ear
"Oh, Gotta Roll"

Gotta roll from shinin' sea to sea
Out to meet my destiny
Gotta roll through the golden fields of grain
Turn around and roll back again

Grandpa Cook and my old Grandma
Rode west from the mines of Arkansas
And the crops that they grew in the hard, dry ground
Filled the cars and made the wheels go round
Sayin', "Gotta Roll"

Sometimes I hear her in my dreams
Workin' up a head of steam
Hot as a cinder in the Fireman's eye
That one-eyed dragon goes screaming through the night
"Gotta Roll"

"Not much to tell on this one, the song is the story."

"I love the interplay between Frank Reckard's electric guitar, Steve Fischel's pedal steel, and Tolak Ollestad's harmonica."
